Do you ever sit down to paint and feel immense pressure to make this piece different? Make it mean something? Make it special somehow? I recently discovered a funny little mindset that steered my artistic growth – and hindered it in major ways. I realized that when I sat down to create, I felt like I needed to come up with everything right then and there. The concept. The colors. The composition. Every single thing had to be fresh right now if I wanted to make a nice painting. But the other day, I sat down to paint at the end of the workday and I was TIRED. I didn’t want to do that whole song and dance. So I cheated. Instead of making something new, I stayed firmly in my comfort zone and stole a composition from an older piece. And guess what? I loved it. It felt scandalous as I was painting, like I was a cat burglar in the night that dishonestly stole and cheated. But after I was done, I realized that your comfort zone is there for a reason and SHOULDN’T be discounted. If you love to paint frogs, then paint frogs. If you love to draw cityscapes, then DO IT. Why shy away from the stuff you’re drawn to (no pun intended)? What’s wrong with drawing the same thing a thousand times?
